Client Background:
The homeowner, located in the southern Sacramento area, encountered a serious issue with her garage door—it couldn’t be lifted at all. In an attempt to resolve the problem, her son forced the door open, which resulted in the cables becoming tangled. Eventually, he cut one of the cables just to get the door to close completely. With the door now non-functional, the homeowner urgently needed a reliable repair to restore access to her garage and ensure safe, everyday use.
Home Type: Single Family Home With A Double Car Garage.
Location: Southern Sacramento, CA.
Primary Concern: Needed to get the garage door operational again after cable damage and forced opening.
Client’s Garage Door Issue
The homeowner was frustrated with her garage door stopping unexpectedly. It had become unreliable, and she wasn’t sure if it was a simple fix or if she needed a costly replacement. Upon inspection, we found that a broken Torque Master cable was making the door inoperable.
- Broken Cable: The door is off tracks due to one of the cables coming unspooled and the door is crooked in the opening and will not operate, this can cause severe damage or can also be fixed with no parts needed if the damage doesn’t compromise integrity of material. In this case we were able to reuse all parts from original install.
Our Inspection & Findings
When we arrived, it was clear the existing spring system had failed, making the door inoperable. The lifting system wasn’t distributing weight correctly, making it difficult to open manually. If left unfixed, would be inoperable and the homeowner would not be able to access the house through that door.
- Spring Failure: The existing Torque Master spring had failed, affecting door operation.
- Lifting System Inefficiency: The door could not be lifted manually.
- Broken Cable: The garage door was inoperable due to the imbalance cause by the cut cable
Our Solution: Torque Master Drum and Cable Replacement
After assessing the situation, we determined that the TorqueMaster system needed to be taken down to confirm whether the internal springs were damaged. With the client’s approval, we disassembled the system for a full inspection. Fortunately, both springs were still in good working condition, allowing us to save the client money by replacing only the worn components—specifically the cables and drums.
We safely released the tension from the system and removed it from the door to begin the work. After taking off the damaged cable loops, we prepped and installed new TorqueMaster-compatible drums and cables, then remounted the spring system. Starting on the left side, we carefully tightened the cable and applied tension, then repeated the process on the right side to evenly balance the door.
Once all tension was applied, we tested the door and made a final adjustment to ensure smooth operation. After confirming everything was properly balanced and functional, we invited the client out for final inspection and approval.
